Under the auspices of Oakville Chamber of Commerce, Terence held consultation on economy
with major employers in Oakville
On December 19th, 2008, with the significant leadership of the Oakville Chamber of
Commerce, Terence held an instructive consultation on the economy with major employers in Oakville.
"I am grateful to Chamber of Commerce members who came out in a major snow storm to provide
ideas on how to tackle this economic downturn and help ensure business and employment growth,"
says Terence.
Here are some of the ideas discussed:
- Maintaining consumer confidence emphasizing positive messages and
language
- Establishing new credit facilities for major lenders
- Assist small businesses obtain credit
- Help train and develop workers with new skills
- Invest in local infrastructure projects such as public transit
- Use economic stimulus to help transform our economy to a green economy
- Lower taxes to encourage investment
"Their words," says Terence, "went from my ears to the Minister of
Finance’s ears on Monday, December 22nd, when members of the GTA Caucus met in Mr.
Flaherty’s Toronto Regional Office. I am confident many of these ideas will be reflected
in the coming budget.
"Other objectives of the numerous meetings and consultations are to examine ways to
strengthen financial market regulation, and how to improve competitiveness. We still have more barriers
to trade (and jobs) between our provinces than there are between many countries. Diane Finley, Minister
of Human Resources and Skills Development, is working with her provincial and territorial counterparts
to remove barriers to labour mobility, to enhance skills development and to expedite foreign credential
recognition. I also fully expect that workers in manufacturing who need it will be provided with
assistance for transitions to other careers.
"Together, these meetings have stimulated productive discussions on economic issues
of importance to Canadian families, seniors and individuals. We are committed to ensuring that all
governments continue to work together to raise Canada’s economic potential to its highest level
ever," concluded Terence.
